Sponsor: Souad Massi, Algerian singer and activist

Souad Massi was born in Algiers and develops an early passion for music. Spotted at the Women of Algeria festival in Paris in 1999, she signs with a music label in France.

Her first album, Raoui, gets released in 2001, and establishes her as a spokesperson for the Algerian youth. Mesk Elil awards her with the Best World music album at the Victoires de la musique in 2006. Distinguished by the order of Art and Letters, she releases her last album, Oumniya, in 2019. Using various registers (folk, rock, chaâbi…), Souad Massi sings very personal texts, inspired by her own past, mainly in Algerian Arabic, but also in French. She is often considered one of the most beautiful voices from Northern Africa.

FOCUS IRAN

For this 15th edition, a special focus was made on Iranian cinema around several movies, old or new, and panel discussions.

Iranian director and curator: Ghasideh Golmakani

Born in Tehran, Ghasideh Golmakani settles in Paris to study culture and history of art. Back to Iran, she directs her first movies – making offs for famous Iranian directors – in a self-taught way. The fictions and documentaries she then directs expose taboos and contradictions within the Iranian society, and raise subjects like street harassment and sexist violences, like in Online Shopping (2017) or Horn (2018). Also a curator, she actively supports the work of female Iranian artists all around the world.
