FOCUS LEBANON
For this 13th edition, a special focus was made on Lebanese cinema around several movies – old or new – and a panel discussion.
Sponsors : Darina Al Joundi, actress and writer, and Lyes Salem, actor and director
Born in 1968 in Beirut, in a Syrio-Lebanese family of intellectuals, Darina Al Joundi is inclassable. Actress since she was eight, she didn’t stop putting herself behind and in front of the camera. In 2001, when her father died, writing and acting became her new form of expression. She has been living in Paris since 2005. Her fame in France comes from her autobiographical plays – Le jour où Nina Simone a cessé de chanter and Ma Marseillaise. In her new book published in May of 2017, Prisonnière du Levant, Darina Al Joundi tells the story of May Ziadeh, the great Lebanese poetess and novelist from the early 20th century. Through her, she tells a part of her own personal story, the story of a free and feminist woman.
Born in 1973 in Algiers, Lyes Salem is a Franco-Algerian actor, screenwriter and director. After his Literature studies, he becomes a theater, television and cinema actor. On stage, he played in classical and modern representations ; in 1998, he stages and plays Djelloul, le raisonneur based on El Ajouad by Abdelkader Alloula. In cinema and television movies, he appears in works by Maurice Failevic, Benoît Jacquot and Hamid Krim. In 1999, he directs his first short film named Lhasa, followed in 2001 with Jean-Farès, obtaining the prize of best short movie at the 2002 Milan African film festival, as well as the Young audience prize in Montpellier. With Cousines, in 2003, Lyes Salem evokes the evolution of mentalities in a shifting society and accurately pictures a portrait of today’s Algeria. This short film is rewarded with many international prizes and a César. In 2008, Lyes Salem directs his first full-length movie, Mascarades, produced by Dharamsala, that was chosen by Algeria to represent the country at the Oscars.
